Suanfarma Biotech SGECR is a Venture Capital Asset Management firm specialized in Biotechnology. Suanfarma Biotech was authorized by the Spanish CNMV (equivalent to the SEC in the US) and registered with the National Stock Exchange in July 2007. SuanFarma Biotech manages funds to invest in seed and early-stage biotechnology companies, but also offers advice to biotech companies on issues related to business and commercial management, and provides support in scientific, industrial, regulatory and financial development.
History
Suanfarma SA was founded in 1993 to capitalize on the incipient generic medication market in Spain. The company began its activities focusing on the development, marketing and distribution of active pharmaceutical ingredients for human and veterinary use. In addition, Suanfarma SA soon began offering customized technical and commercial advice on regulatory issues and intellectual property in different areas of the health sector including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and nutrition. In 1999, the company created a department for New Product Development in order to participate more directly in the development of advanced generic medicines. Today, Suanfarma SA is present in over 60 countries worldwide, with six offices abroad and numerous trade agreements.
In 2005, following the high expectations generated by the arrival of biotech drugs in the market, Suanfarma SA created a Biotechnology Division. Its mission was to select, incubate and support Spanish research-based businesses and their management teams originating from universities and public research centers. In early 2007, in order to find a suitable way that could provide consistency and continuity to the Division’s project, Suanfarma requested CNMV approval for the establishment of a venture capital asset management firm and its first investment fund, Suan Biotech FCR.
In July of the same year, the venture capital asset management firm Suanfarma Biotech SGECR was born and began working on the constitution of its first fund, Suan Biotech FCR. In January 2009 the fund was closed with nine million euros which were invested in eight high added-value biotech companies: 3P Biopharmaceuticals, Halotech DNA, Vivia Biotech, Salupharma Biosimilars, Pevesa, ClaveSuan, Agrenvec and Biomedal.
Currently, Suanfarma Biotech SGECR is raising its second fund – Suan Biotech FCR II – with a target of 40 million euros. A number of reference investors have already committed to invest and several high-potential biotechnology projects have been shortlisted as potential investments.
